Jodikinos Farm

Your Trusted Source for Freshness at the Swissvale Farmers Market

Every market day, from June through October, the Swissvale Farmers Market is delighted to welcome back Jodikinos Farm, your dedicated local grower of delicious produce and beautiful flowers.

For generations, the Jodikinos family has cultivated the land, and their commitment to quality and community shines through in everything they offer. What started with a modest 7 acres by Ed’s grandfather in 1947 has blossomed into a thriving 120-acre operation, nestled on the Allegheny and Beaver county line. The farm’s history is deeply rooted in the area, with the Jodikinos family thoughtfully acquiring the neighboring Weber Farm as they retired in the 1920s.

When you visit the Jodikinos stand, you’re not just buying produce and flowers; you’re connecting with the people who nurture them from seed to harvest. Ed has a particular passion for his sweet corn, admitting with a smile that the perfect picking time is often a spontaneous decision! You can also look forward to a delightful selection of apples (grown since 1995), plums, and nectarines, all bursting with seasonal flavor.

Beyond the fruits and vegetables, Jodikinos Farm offers a charming array of cut flowers and even unique squash blossoms, bringing a touch of rustic beauty to your home. You can also pick up fresh eggs at their stand. Their approach to floristry is refreshingly “old school,” with a focus on the natural beauty of the blooms.

What truly sets Jodikinos Farm apart is their deep respect for the land and the well-being of their customers. While not certified organic, Ed is exceptionally careful about pesticide use, a commitment born from personal experience. He conducts thorough research to ensure the safety of his produce, prioritizing the health of the community above all else. You might even spot him observing the birds on his farm, a testament to his dedication to maintaining a balanced and healthy ecosystem. A few years ago, when the local bird population was struggling, they proactively reduced bug control measures to ensure the birds had an adequate food source – a clear indication of their holistic approach to farming.

This connection to nature extends to the two ponds on their property, a large 30-foot deep pond and a smaller pond stocked with trout. These natural features contribute to the farm’s biodiversity and offer a peaceful backdrop to their daily work.

Family is at the heart of Jodikinos Farm. Ed’s wife, an RN at Friendship Ridge in Beaver, is part of the team, and the whole family pitches in to ensure the farm’s success. You might even meet Ed’s brother, DJ, who meticulously researches seeds and approaches planting with the care one would give newborns.

Community spirit is also a cornerstone of their operation. Jodikinos Farm hires local high school students for their summer production, providing valuable work experience. Ed’s philosophy extends to anyone in need of an opportunity, stating, “If I can help someone out I’ll help them out,” and he’s been known to offer employment to those facing challenges.

Sustainability is also a key practice at Jodikinos Farm. They actively reuse flower baskets and flats, and even welcome you to bring your own bags to the market, a practice they truly appreciate. Their many greenhouses are managed thoughtfully, opened one at a time at the beginning of the season to conserve heating resources.

The dedication to the farm is a year-round commitment, though they do take a well-deserved two-week break after Thanksgiving to spend family time at their camp in the mountains. While the busy season used to kick off intensely on January 1st, they’ve shifted the heavy workload to February, recognizing the demanding 8-16 hour days once planting begins.

Jodikinos Farm is more than just a vendor; they are a vital part of our local food system. Their commitment to quality, community, and sustainable practices makes them a cherished presence at the Swissvale Farmers Market. Be sure to stop by their stand, say hello, and experience the freshness and care that goes into every item they offer. You might even hear stories of the farm’s history, from its humble beginnings to the present day, including tales of Ed’s father working in the steel mill until the farm demanded his full attention. And who knows, you might even get invited to their summer hayrides!

Supporting Jodikinos Farm means supporting a local homestead deeply connected to the greater Pittsburgh communities and a family dedicated to bringing you the very best the season has to offer. We eagerly anticipate their return to the Swissvale Farmers Market on June 7th!
